Khurasan’s Modern Zombies – Part 2

I’ve made a lot of progress on the 15mm zombies today. Eight are done and based. That’s what you are traditionally supposed to do on Independence Day, right? Paint and base zombie miniatures?

Painting is done. I had just enough Dullcote left to spray them.

After the Dullcote dried, I mixed some red paint with CItadel’s ‘Ardcoat to make “wet blood” and applied that in some small areas. The I superglued them onto Litko bases.

This is my standard vinyl spackling mixed with water and brushed onto the base to build it up even with the mini’s built in base.

I gave the spackling 2 hours to dry and then painted it. I also painted a black edge.

One group got full on grass.

The other group got sand and grass and some grass tufts.

I wanted to show just how small these minis are. I know a lot of people are not used to 15mm scale minis.

I’m very happy with how these came out. 8 down, 12 to go. As I mentioned before, I intend to use these with the Monster Hunter International RPG.

Basing With Citadel Texture – Rebel Minis 15mm Government Types

I painted Rebel Mini’s 15mm Government Types and I wanted to base them like they were standing in the street or a parking lot. I decided to try CItadel’s texture paints. I use Citadel because they are easily available at several hobby stores near my home and work.

I’m pretty happy with how they came out.

Painting done and sprayed with Dullcote – front and back view. There’s a pic of these in bare metal and with just primer on in my post What’s On My Table – June 2013 Edition.

Spackling, mixed with a bit of water to thin it, applied to the base to build it up even with the figure’s built in base.

Then I sanded the spackling flat. I’ll probably skip this step in the future. It messed up some of the figure’s feet, which I had to go back and fix, and I don’t see that it really made a difference to the bases.

I then applied the Citadel texture “Astrogranite”. It’s pretty thick, so I thinned it with some water. It was still more like a basing material than paint. You don’t brush it on so much as push it around.

Then I painted on some road lines and parking space lines. Then a light gray dry brush. Then a black border. If you’ve read my blog before, you know the bases are from Litko.net – 20mm around, 0.8mm thick wood base with a heavy duty magnet bottom stuck underneath it.

Is the guy in the front, 2nd from left, talking on the phone or smoking a cigarette? I can’t really tell, so I’m going with talking on the phone. That way he’ll get brain cancer instead of lung cancer.

I like how these turned out – the figures and the bases. I plan to use them with the Monster Hunter International RPG.

Mall Cops

I finished my Rebel Minis 15mm Mall Cops tonight. Rebel also has “US Policemen”, but the Mall Cops have these awesome mustaches, and I just couldn’t resist. I intend to use them for the Monster Hunter International RPG, but cop figures have a wide range of uses.

The base coat is done, and they are ready for a wash.

A select few. The guy on the left is the only figure of the 8 that has no mustache. I imagine the rest of the squad give him crap about it all the time. “Nice job, Frank, for a guy with no mustache”. “You would do better with the ladies if you had a sweet ‘stache like mine.” etc… 🙂

GZG’s Spider Drones

Over the last 2 weeks I’ve been working on 12 of GZG’s Spider Drones – 2 packs each of the standard and rotary canon. I paused in the middle and painted some other stuff, then my bases finally arrived from Litko, so I finished them up this weekend.

I painted them all the same, except for the top, which I painted in a similar style as I did the Grav Drones a while back. Then I based them using Green Stuff.

Cleaned and assembled. There’s a bit of flash around the leg joints that I just left – it was going to be very time consuming to clean, and leaving just added to the “spider legs” effect, I think.

Primed.

Various stages. Here’s was my process:

Do the bottom parts of all of them with a rough coat of metallic silver.
One at a time, do the metallic brass parts, then the black guns, the red lens, and highlights
Wash the bottom in heavy black
Paint the top

Here’s the bases in various stages. Litko 0.8mm thick wooden bases, 30mm in diameter, with a Litko heavy duty magnet bottom under it. Then I pre-cut the bits for the top of the base. That’s some metal mesh from the hardware store – I also use it to make chain link fences – and some square plastic mesh I got at the craft store in the knitting section.

Here’s with the Green Stuff – ready for primer.

There’s the Green Stuff, rolled flat. I put the base on it and use the razor blade to cut it to fit. The copper pipe fitting I use to make the circular indent. I have a smaller one, also. The mesh I just press gently into it, and it sticks. No glue needed.

All primed.

All painted.

A coat of shiny varnish, and then I glued the drone on to it.

Making the bases was fun, but I don’t think they look as good on the Spiders as they did on the Grav Drones. It’s too busy and dark. Lesson learned.

Khurasan’s 15mm Scientists

I’m still on a “fun painting” kick while I wait for my bases to arrive for my GZG Spider Drones. I just finished Khurasan’s 15mm Scientists. They are a pack of 4, each in a different pose, but I only painted 3 of them, because the 4th pose is a dead one lying on the ground, and it didn’t really interest me.

By “fun painting” I mean I don’t really have a use in mind for these figures. They could be the objective in a game of Gruntz, I supposed – rescue the scientists. But I’m just painting them for fun, not for a specific game or purpose.

All cleaned up and attached to the stick with poster tack. There was very little flash or mold lines to clean.

Painting is done and they are superglued to the wooded base. That’s a 0.8mm wooden base, 20mm in diameter, with a magnet stuck to the bottom of it. Both the base and the magnet are from Litko.net.

The feet on the two male figures are really small. It’s going to be difficult to not cover them in the next step.

I used vinyl spackling mixed with a little water to cover the bases. It applies easily with a brush. In the past I’ve also mixed it with sand and very small rocks to make it bumpy, but in this case I wanted it smooth.

I gave that about 2 hours to dry and then I painted it brown, and the edge black.

I glued on some static grass, and they are done. WIth the grass, it doesn’t really matter that their feet are so small, they are hidden in the grass, anyway.

I gave the guy on the left a pink shirt, because he reminds me of my friend Derrick, and Derrick often wears pink shirts. The bald guy on the right just makes me laugh. I imagine him totally out of breath, scared shitless from the zombies chasing him, really wishing he was in better shape. Also, his glasses are broken so he can’t see very well. Poor guy. He’s going to be zombie chow very soon.
