{"id":824,"date":"2013-10-31T06:18:25","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T06:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/?p=824"},"modified":"2013-10-31T06:20:45","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T06:20:45","slug":"terrain-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/?p=824","title":{"rendered":"Terrain Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I needed a break from painting my Germans for <a href=\"http:\/\/toofatlardies.co.uk\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=25\" target=\"_blank\">Chain Of Command<\/a>, so starting this past Thursday, and finishing today, I worked on terrain. \u00a0I planned on making some <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bocage\" target=\"_blank\">bocage<\/a>, but after a trip to the hobby store, I ended up with some strip styrene to make tank traps with. \u00a0Then, I saw some great 15mm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookhursthobbies.com\/Product-Detail.cfm?P=PPIG210066&amp;N=10\" target=\"_blank\">stone walls<\/a> on Brookhurst Hobby&#8217;s site, so I ordered those.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_start.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-810\" alt=\"bocage_start\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_start.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_start_cross_section.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-809\" alt=\"bocage_start_cross_section\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_start_cross_section.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a>In the model airplane section of my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobby101.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">local hobby store<\/a>, I found this curved piece of wood, as well as the flat pice I used as a base. \u00a0This will serve as the basis of my bocage. \u00a0I glued them together, let it dry overnight, then cut them with a circular saw, since I don&#8217;t have anything more subtle. \u00a0Then I sanded the sharp edges to a slight curve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_start.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-816\" alt=\"tank_traps_start\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_start.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"537\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_start_2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-815\" alt=\"tank_traps_start_2\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_start_2.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a>At that same hobby store, I found this strip styrene. \u00a0They had all kinds &#8211; I beams, hollow square, etc. \u00a0I thought it would be perfect for tank traps. \u00a0I used superglue to make the tripods, and glued them to some leftover wood from the bocage base.<\/p>\n<p>The mini is a 15mm Sci-Fi soldier from <a href=\"http:\/\/rebelminis.com\/eafomain.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rebel Minis<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;ll be using him as a size reference today. For you Flames Of War players, he&#8217;s almost exactly the same size as Battlefront&#8217;s plastic soldiers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/walls_start.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-823\" alt=\"walls_start\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/walls_start.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"668\" \/><\/a>These are the 15mm walls, cleaned and ready for primer. \u00a0They are resin, and are made by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterpig.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Pig.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_primed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-808\" alt=\"bocage_primed\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_primed.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"596\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_with_rocks.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-812\" alt=\"bocage_with_rocks\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_with_rocks.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"537\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_with_rocks_painted.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-811\" alt=\"bocage_with_rocks_painted\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_with_rocks_painted.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"726\" \/><\/a>I primed the bocage black, glued some model railway ballast rocks to it, and let it dry overnight. Then I used some leftover Citadel sepia shade on it, and let that dry. \u00a0Last, I dry brushed it gray. \u00a0I like the black \/ brown \/ gray combination.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_primed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-814\" alt=\"tank_traps_primed\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_primed.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a>I used some vinyl spackling mixed with sand to fill in the base of the tank traps. \u00a0I talk about that process in several <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/?p=388\" target=\"_blank\">other blog posts<\/a>. \u00a0I let that dry overnight, then primed it all black.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/wall_primed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-819\" alt=\"wall_primed\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/wall_primed.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a>At the same time, I primed the stone walls black.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tanktraps_top.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-817\" alt=\"tanktraps_top\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tanktraps_top.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"821\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_complete.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813\" alt=\"tank_traps_complete\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tank_traps_complete.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>I painted the tank traps and base. \u00a0I used the sepia shade on the base to good effect, I think. \u00a0I could probably use more practice painting rusty metal, though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/walls_closeup_full.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-820\" alt=\"walls_closeup_full\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/walls_closeup_full.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/walls_extra_close.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-822\" alt=\"walls_extra_close\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/walls_extra_close.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m really happy with how the walls came out, and they were really easy to paint. \u00a0A dry brush of gray, followed by a dry brush of white. \u00a0Then a green dry brush for the grass, some light dabs of tan, and a tan paint for the weeds.<\/p>\n<p>The gate is brown, with a yellow-brown highlight and a black wash.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_complete_side.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-806\" alt=\"bocage_complete_side\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_complete_side.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"639\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_closeup_2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-804\" alt=\"bocage_closeup_2\" src=\"http:\/\/tabletop.magigames.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bocage_closeup_2.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"429\" \/><\/a>The bocage was a lot more work than the rest. \u00a0I used Aleene&#8217;s Fast Grab Tacky Glue. \u00a0I spread it all over the top, then stuck the foliage on it. \u00a0I used several different colors. \u00a0After it was dry, I touched it up with some more glue and foliage. \u00a0When that was dry, I soaked the whole thing in watered down PVA glue. \u00a0That took 2 days to dry, but they are pretty solid now. \u00a0Nothing is falling off these bocage.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, some static grass on the edges. \u00a0I think I need a &#8220;greener&#8221;
